How to Make Your Wedding Dance Memorable

Wedding and event planners know how important a couple’s first dance at their wedding can be. Without the proper preparation, a first dance can often be a well, boring moment (sorry!) at the reception . Why not make it a memorable moment in your wedding? You don’t have to be elaborate or crazy with your first dance (although that’s a lot of fun too!) but wouldn’t be wonderful to dance with ease and grace with your brand new life partner? A nice wedding first dance communicates to the world just how in-sync and great for each other the two of you are.

Below are some short tips on selecting your first dance song and preparation with your wedding dress:

Hottest New Wedding Dance Songs

We just love Collbie Caillat’s song “I Do” and think it’s going to be the hottest wedding first dance songs of next year. We think it’s one of the most adorable wedding songs! What do you think? Is this an appropriate first dance song for a wedding?

Some other wedding dance songs we like:

“Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Collbie Caillat
“The Way You Look Tonight” various artists
“Love Story” Taylor Swift
“Fly Me to the Moon” Frank Sinatra
“All I Do is Dream of You” Michael Buble
“Moondance” Van Morrison

What is your favorite wedding dance music?

Did you take Dance lessons for your wedding?

Brides. com’s Facebook Fan Page recently asked brides and grooms: “Did you take dance lessons for your wedding?” The responses were really interesting and some of them surprised me! I thought I’d share some of my favorite responses below:

CD: Yes, we did lessons and loved it. It’s actually a great bonding time where we got to touch and look at each other for an hour or so. We plan on taking more classes in September. I would recommend it.

DN: omg we didn’t. We just “middle schooled” it as someone said above. I can dance, he can’t. I thought it would be fine but as we swayed, he said “you were right, we should’ve taken some classes. this is boring even to me”. you dont need a big choreographed dance, just take them to pick up a few fun moves!!

RD: Yes..Thank Goodness and we were still BAD…lol.. When your the only ones out on the dance floor its like the song is never going to end Thank goodness its all over!

SL: No but only because we didn’t have that type of reception. And I won’t be have that kind this go around either. It’s nice for those kinds of receptions for couples to take lessons if the don’t already have the moves.

AG: …It has become “our time” during our busy schedules throughout the week. We both look forward to our dance lessons twice a week because it gives us time together…

MW: Not yet, but its on The Do List.

Thank you, Merci, Gracias!

It was time for a little spring cleaning and I found a really nice “Thank You” note from some super fantastic former clients. Terry and Gina needed some help preparing their first dance for their wedding. Gina and her dad also need some dance lessons and I helped choreograph their adorable song, “My Girl” for their father daughter dance. In the middle of our time together, Gina and her fiance Terry found out that they were going to be moving to the South, due to Terry’s school. They decided it would be fun to have me attend their wedding in Orange County and teach their guests a surprise line dance lesson! Their guests were very surprised and it was super fun to see Terry and Gina off in Southern style!

Line Dance Lessons in Orange County

I love getting notes from my clients and so I thought I’d share theirs. Thanks guys!

“We apologize for sending this so late, but we wanted to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being our dance instructor! We had so much fun at all of our lessons and really created some lasting memories. It was so endearing seeing my dad work so hard at learning the steps. Now, whenever I hear the song “My Girl” I think of him. :) The guests seemed to love our dances and the line dancing too! Thanks so much for coming and doing that for us! We wish you continued success in your career!”

All the best,

Gina and Terry

Groom review for dance lessons on Yelp

I love when I get reviews from grooms about their dance lessons! Since it’s not all that uncommon for a groom-to-be to prefer to skip that part of the wedding planning, I find it the biggest compliment when they tell me how much they actually enjoyed their dance lessons.

My clients pictured in this post, Omid and Hanieh had lots of fun working on their first dance for their wedding. They danced a Foxtrot and Swing to Nat King Cole’s “L-O-V-E.” We even added a fun surprise ending dance lift (pictured left.)

I was so honored by Omid’s review for his dance lessons on Yelp, I decided to post an excerpt from it here. Thanks so much Omid and Hanieh and congrats!

From Omid on Yelp.com:

As a guy, there was one thing I was hoping my fiance at the time would not ask me to do at our wedding.  In fact, I was convinced the reason guys shy of getting married is the thought of First Dance.

Never-the-less my Fiance got me to go for the first lesson with Jennelle.  For me to get a sense if I liked it or not …. I finally decided to go along.

Working with Jennelle in that first session was such a pleasure and so easy that I looked forward to our next session.  In fact honest to goodness, when our wedding was done and over with and looking back I LOVED one part of the wedding, and it was the First Dance and all our practices with Jennelle leading up to it.

She is so fun, caring, flexible, listens well, understands you do not plan to be an expert in the dance and teaches you what you need to know to just be amazing for your first dance.

We mastered the dance – I actually would come home, get on YouTube and find different moves I liked in Dancing with the Stars and we would go back for next lesson and ask her to add on…. add on … believe that?

She was just amazing – a great experience.  Even if not for a wedding and just for weekend fun, and to learn something great, I really recommend taking lessons with Jennelle.  It will make you feel great about yourself and enjoy your future parties/gatherings knowing how to dance and impress.   Guys – you will love your time – trust me.

Personal Note:  Jennelle – thanks a bunch – you are wonderful and wish you all the best in life and your career.  You ROCK!

Dancing with the Stars Showcase

A few weeks ago, dancing students at the dance studio participated in a “Dancing With the Stars” Student Showcase. Each student picked a ‘star’ or celebrity couple they wanted to emulate (with costumes, hair, makeup, etc.) We then picked an appropriate song and style of dance to portray that celebrity. It was so fun! We had Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, KISS, Sergio Mendez, and even Princess Leia.

Our student Don (pictured) was Barry Manilow, his favorite singer and celebrity. We did Orange County Dancing Lessonssome Swing dancing to the song, “It’s a Miracle.” Don did a great job of smiling and keeping his head up (and not down starring at his feet) the whole dance routine! And he also nailed the choreography, which helped too. But I always say that people will forgive a lot of technical mistakes if the people they’re watching look like they’re enjoying themselves and having fun! Most people in your “audience” don’t know your choreography or your dance routine anyway. :) They just want to see you having fun!

Orange County Dance LessonsIt was a super great experience and everyone had a blast! If you have never performed in front of people before, you should definitely do it! At least once. The nice thing about student showcases is that they’re just that–STUDENT showcases. Everyone is at different levels of experience and we had ages 15-83 years old participating. For many of those in the dance show, it was their very first performing experience and many had been dancing less than a year. See? Everyone can “Dance with the Stars.” lol.
